About La Mora and the school

La Mora is a small community in El Salvador that consists of about 80 families whose main income is in agricultural work (corn, sugarcane, watermelon, tomatoes, etc.). It is also a historical area where armed conflict took place during the civil war in the 1980's. La Mora is about a fifteen minute bus ride away from the colonial town of Suchitoto, an hour north of San Salvador. Suchitoto is the tourism capital of El Salvador, famous for its colonial architecture, lake and mountainside beauty and tourism opportunities.

"Comité de reconstrucción y desarrollo económico social de comunidades de Suchitoto" (CRC) is an association in Suchitoto that works on improving the economy of Suchitoto and its surroundings (including La Mora) and started the Spanish school project together with Global Youth Network. The aim of La Escuela Guazapa, is to better the local economy and bring sustainable development to La Mora.

From all costs paid by the tourist and/or student for Spanish lessons, 40% will be invested in improving the conditions of the infrastructure and economy of La Mora. Similarly, for all costs paid toward local accommodation, 20% will be designated to this project of long-term development. The project also provides jobs to the local teachers in La Mora.
