Current ProjectsBrazilGlobal sends teams to three locations in Brazil: Manaus, São Paulo and São Gabriel da Cachoeira. One of the largest cities in the world, São Paulo is also home to many poverty-stricken favelas. The "São Paulo Team" is hosted by Global's partner organization Youth With a Mission (JOCUM in Brazil) who are busy providing shelter, activities, programs, education, recreation and dignity to those poor in and around the metropolis. Teams travel outside of the city as well to the smaller community of Francisco Morato, where their presence and assistance is warmly welcomed. A hospitable and lively culture, makes Brazil an excellent place for Global teams to learn and be challenged. The city of Manaus has a famous and colourful history as the last stop in civilization for travellers heading into one of the most wild and untamed regions of the world, the Amazon. In the city, "Team Manaus" has the opportunity to visit some famous sites, like the Amazon Theatre, as well as visiting some of the projects aimed at helping the poor and the homeless street kids in the area. Outside of the city, the teams have the opportunity to work at the primary school and the home for abused and abandoned children run by one of our Youth With A Mission (JOCUM) affiliates. Global Youth Network teams have been involved in this Children's Shelter since its beginning in 2002. From the construction of the facility to the growth of the children, it has been remarkable to see the progress over the years. The "Manaus Team" also has the chance to travel down the river by boat to visit some of the remote communities there. The "Amazon Team" actually heads even further up river to the community of São Gabriel da Cachoeira to take the opportunity to live among the indigenous communities. In 2008, the "Amazon Team" made a new and special connection with the Daw people, who warmly welcomed the team to observe their lifestyle and to join in! Sleeping in hammocks for the month, this team also took part in educative and sports activities, construction and maintenance and teaching English. The Amazon Team will also have the opportunity to be hosted by JOCUM in both São Paulo and Manaus, while en route to the interior Amazon. It's a long journey, but worth it! |
