Current ProjectsKenya Global teams travelling to Kenya work with the following organizations: Living Positive Kenya in Ngong, Rift Valley Province (also near Masailand), whose aim is to break the cycle of poverty that is occurring in the slums, while at the same time tackling the medical and social and psychological issues associated with being HIV positive. The group consists of women and their children who are living openly with HIV. The women participate in group discussions that help them to understand their condition and to tackle the stigma associated with AIDS. They are also taught basic skills so that they can make such products as cards, bookmarks and leather goods to sell in the market for income. Another aim of the group is to get the children into boarding schools so they are not exposed to the dangers of the slums. Ugunja Community Resource Centre (UCRC) is a community development NGO located in Western Kenya. They serve the area of Siaya District and neighbouring communities to promote sustainable development and empower communities through increasing access to information. Some of their projects include a community library, a hatchery, microfinance projects, a sports academy for the children, computer training courses, a seed bank, counseling and psychosocial support and a bike restoration centre. Teams will live in traditional mud hut housing compounds with local families, helping prepare meals and experience village life. Over years of personal connection to the family, Global has newly decided to also work with the Kandara Children's Home outside of Thika Town, 60 km from Nairobi. Existing for over forty years, Kandara is home to one hundred children, mostly orphans from HIV/AIDS. Teams participate in general repair work, maintenance and care for the children. Teams are encouraged to bring gifts of clothing and computers to assist the children in this orphanage. |
