Current ProjectsTanzaniaAfter our first year of sending both University Teams and Interns of the Internship Program, Global has been evaluating the work accomplished and the partnerships initiated to be able to continue sending teams and Interns to Tanzania. Future Tanzania teams will focus on organizations based in Arusha, in the Kilimanjaro area and in Mwanza, closer to Lake Victoria. Hands of Mercy Children's Home and Watoto wa Africa are two homes for children orphaned because of HIV/AIDS and it is the belief of the founders of these homes to see that all children be given the right to develop intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually, as well as to play and have a fun, safe childhood. Global teams have the chance to partner in this by assisting with the care of the children and by teaching English, sports, computers, music and/or photography. Other volunteer teams have had opportunities to assist in improving water systems, solar panel installation, agricultural projects and small business ventures and Global looks forward to seeing similar opportunities for teams to make a difference. St. Lucia Hospice and Orphanage provides both inpatient and outpatient services to the community. Services delivered to inpatients include: nutritional food, medicine, referrals for ART, Tuberculosis treatment, prevention of opportunistic infections for HIV/AIDS, counseling, education for the children, clothing, school uniforms, and shelter. Services delivered for outpatients include: food, medicine, counseling, education for families and individuals regarding the transmission of HIV/AIDS,and how to care for HIV/AIDS sufferers in their homes (so that they can minimize cross infections) including proper handling of food, use of toilets and referrals to clinics for those affected. Global participants volunteer at the hospice (helping with meals, cleaning, feeding and washing); at the clinic and orphanage (preparing meals, changing diapers and bathing); at the pre-school (teaching classes, feeding the younger children and washing the children’s clothes); and with the home-care visits in the local community (going into the slums and rural areas to visit the sick at home and bring them medicines or maybe a doctor.) Also in the Arusha area is the Meru Peak School whose vision is to provide quality, well-rounded and free education to children whose parents have died of HIV/AIDS. The Meru Peak School also educates the children about HIV/AIDS prevention. Global teams have had the privilege of being a part of providing English, French, math and science lessons to these children while contributing to the maintenance of the facility. |
