Current ProjectsEl Salvador Global Youth Network has had a long-standing relationship with El Salvador, a beautiful country with a rich history. Over the many years that teams have travelled through Global to El Salvador, students have been a part of responding to the poverty and injustices they have seen. Many small communities across the country are organizing several community improvement projects and Global students and staff have had the privilege of contributing their ideas and their abilities. It is this that has led to the opening of La Escuela Guazapa, a Spanish language school in the small community of La Mora, in partnership with "Comité de reconstrucción y desarrollo económico social de comunidades de Suchitoto" (CRC), an association that works on improving the economy of Suchitoto and its surroundings. Global teams annually visit this community and contribute to their development by participating in the school and helping with small tasks. The El Salvador trip is a complete immersion into a local culture, with small community living and home stays being the norm. Rather than working with larger, international organizations, Global continues to build our relationship with the people living in small communities, such as La Mora. In 2008, the May team initiated a new relationship with the community of Zacamil 1, serving them by building a road. This community immediately invited our teams to return hence, a new relationship has begun. Global believes that it is these types of personal connections that teach us the most about the culture and promotes consideration for the people. In addition to lending a hand where asked (farming, building, cleaning), teams to El Salvador are able to hear many stories from the people, taking in a lot of knowledge on issues of society, politics, economics and religion. |
